WCCC's New Kensington Education Center Declares Pizza War

Posted Monday, March 12, 2012 by Gabriel Gardiner

Westmoreland County Community College's New Kensington Education Center recently conducted a contest to find the best local pizza of the downtown New Kensington and Arnold areas.

Dubbed "Pizza War", the operation was executed with textbook discipline under non-biased conditions at the end of last month. A colored toothpick identified each outfit. More than 100 students participated in the first annual event. It was a very close competition between the five participating shops.

P&M Pizza of Arnold claimed first place by just two votes. Perry Di Pizzaman and Fox's Pizza both of New Kensington took second and third respectively. Egidio's Pizzeria and Stella's were the remaining pizza platoons that participated.

Dawn and Philp McKinley of P&M Pizza, credit the success of their shop to a certain "uniqueness," unattainable by the commercial pizza chains. This, they said, translates to quality ingredients and all things homemade, even the dough.

Thad Cirigliano, Perry Di Pizzaman's owner and chief procurement officer, also said it's quality ingredients that make a quality product.

"We buy the best stuff, and import product from around the country," Cirigliano said.

WCCC's New Kensington Education Center moved to its current location at 1150 5th Avenue three years ago and is taking an active role in the economic development of the community.
